On-page and Off-page are the two basic website optimizing techniques

On-page refers to modifications that can be made to the pages of a website in order to improve its performance. One of the most popular on-page techniques uses keywords, those terms that Web surfers will use when trying to get a hold of your site through a search engine. Professionals advise that, for optimal utility, these words should be placed in the "title" and "meta" tags, in the name of your site's domain, as well as throughout the content of the pages.

Off-page techniques, they include things that can be done outside the pages of a website so as to improve its ranking. This is called link building it is like obtaining links from other high-ranking sites. This can either be done by contacting the webmaster and convincing him of the quality of your site which is called link exchange, or by posting links yourself on forums and blogs which allow your web links as signatures.

On page is sumthing what u do on site ie u modify the content of ur site n off page u do off site. Ways of doing it are article submission, forum posting,directory submission,social bookmarking etc.Both of them help to get traffic but one has to do it on regular basis.

Off-page is all about getting back links for your site form different sources like social book marking , forum posting , blog commenting etc

Two parts of SEO (1) On page and (2) Off page
on page depent upon you and off page depend upon other websites.

1. Social Networking Sites (such as wordpress, squidoo, livejournal, etc)
2. Web 2.0 Profiles
3. Articles
4. Social Bookmarking
5. Social Sites (facebook, twitter, google+, etc)

If you are doing all 5 of those techniques with quality and uniqueness then you should be able to rank much easier.

Off-page optimization is mainly pure linkbuilding work which consisted of Directory submission,forum posting, link wheels, etc.
