You have more options when you are using a blog. You can add more applications and make it look better. Maybe is because I had a blog and I am familiar with it.

You have to fix both, require your own web based blog, and make articles and caller post on others to catch your name out there in the domain of SEM.

Both are they best method and help lot in ranking, but i would suggest to use blog its much easier to back link from it.
