To send people to the right place, 301 permanently send people and search engines to a new page. Often used for passing on search engine credit and for people who don't know the page location has changed.

Case Study:

I used to have articles in simple html format on my site. When I started blogging using wordpress I began to move those articles to my blog for obvious reasons.

and then came extensive need of 301

301 header tells Google and browsers that this content has permanently moved from this location to it's new location.

301 redirect is a permanent redirect which helps to shift an old url of a website to a new url. Search engines do not impose penalty to the website for this type of redirection.
