Alexa rank is based on a site's traffic. So the more traffic you get on your site the higher ranking you'll get on Alexa.

Like "ketul" said, I also find Alexa not helpful at all. The statistics that I get from Google Analytics are way off from Alexas'. At one point my Alexa ranking was 680,000 when my site had only about 1,000 visitor a day. But when my site traffic increased to 2,500 - 4,000, my Alexa ranking increased to 1.5 million instead of reducing. I kind of got confused. (I understand that more websites could have come up online but the discrepancy was too big).

Alexa rank is traffic rank of your website. it depends upon your website traffic if your traffic rank is increase then Alexa rank will decrease and if traffic decreases then Alexa rank will increase.
