I think it boils down to good content. Back links are very important also, but they need to be natural links, not a massive purchase of low quality links. Slowly building links combined with good quality content.

Try to use Google Adwords to check how competitive before deciding on it. Be sure that the keywords has enough searches. Try using broad key words too
