Hah, it's just the same if you asked "What is an article in newspaper? I've heard it generates traffic". I mean every mentioning of your company in the net may generate good traffic, if its interesting enough to read. As for press releases - there are plenty of sources in the net for that - I like this one: http://www.pr.com/press-release/457008.

It's just another way to get some word out on your product or service. But keep in mind you want to ensure it's 'news worthy' and not just 'buy my stuff'... It's also useful in an overall online marketing strategy. Google 'reasons to do a press release' and you'll be amazed at some of the articles that come up on the topic. Good stuff out there.
