Article Submissions is the best way to get quality backlink for the website.
press release is common in the field of public relations, the aim of which is to attract favorable media attention to public relations professional�s client and/or provide publicity for products or events marketed by those clients.
so i think both of are equally effective.

Both have their own importance if posted on good websites Press release is written on behalf of company to promote the product or service and the article is written by third party to brief about specific topic.

I think both have their own importance as press release is about the up coming and on going news about your business and articles may be of any topic. But article gives a wide range of topic you may discuss about and hence as many articles you post will have the outcome in the sense of back links and keyword rankings.

From my point of view, the effectiveness of each depends on the niche it is being used for. There are niches that dealing with PR submission is such a bad idea, while there are also niches that dealing with article marketing is only a waste of time. Both are effective ways to spread the words about a website, but they might not be as effective to some.

I would say that article directories are very effective, what you need to do is to post quality and fresh articles to top article directories.

In my opinion Press release techniquen is most effective. It generates huge traffic. If you use quality and fresh content in article than it also gives you traffic and Backlinks.

If you're just spamming for links (which you probably are) then unfortunately/fortunately neither are likely to be worth the time or effort invested - and could potentially do you more harm than good.
