How to Repair a Flat Roof?
So you've got a little leakage problem in your flat-roofed house. To repair a flat roof that is leaking you need to first be able to identify where the leak is coming from. This is the part where you put your keen observation skills to work, looking for imperfections and following water stains like a detective.
1. Sweep the roof to get any dust or dirt away from your work area. The roofing cement you'll be using won't stick if the surface is dirty. 2. Cut out around any cracked or peeling areas with a razor knife and remove each bad section. Make it a uniform shape such as a square or rectangle. 3. Cut another patch of shingle about 2 inches larger all the way around. 4. Slip a putty knife under the edges around the cutout area. Apply roofing cement under the edges. 5. Put a layer of roofing cement down in the entire cutout area with the putty knife. 6. Press the new shingle into the hole. etc. Epdm l Flat Roof Diy |

Flat roof leaks rarely are directly above where the leak is noticed from below. Water usually travels underneath the roof membrane until it finds a low point in the ceiling below.
If you can definitely see damage from above the roof then that's where you might want to apply tar/sealant. If you can't find damage then the roof might be leaking in several very small areas, in which case applying a waterproof/resistant membrane and covering with a thin layer of pea gravel (to hold it down) might be an option. Be sure there's a slope toward the drains. Another option is to lay down pressure treated 2x4s/4x4s before laying down the membrane. This will create channels for the water to run toward the drain while creating a currogated profile to help air circulate underneath...to dry out what is |

To remove the gravel, use the flat portion of a pry bar, holding the tool upside down to scrape the gravel from the surface of the roof. The pry bar should be drawn in one direction, not back and forth. Remove the gravel at least 4" to 6" beyond the planned patch area.

The main cause for a flat roof leaking is due to weather damage resulting in material deterioration.
