I really wonder how or what can companies do to maintain their top rankings.
What should be done to maintain site�s ranking?

Never stop building your backlinks, let it be a continuous process and not a one time job.

Just be consistent with whatever you are doing (Adding fesh & unique content, building HQ links). Remember, SEO is not a set-it-forget-it game. But even with continued organic efforts, you cannot be sure about your site�s ranking. Minor fluctuations are pretty normal.

As you are saying To Maintain so presuming you already having good position and to maintain top Rankings you have to focus on quality link building only guest blogging and quality blog forum commenting can be good option for this. Poor quality links can hurt your existing ranking

Do proper onpage for the web page. Choose the right keywords for the webpage and according to those keywords, build links towards your site by different off page techniques of SEO like Web 2.0, forum posting, blog commenting, article submission, social bookmarking, press release etc. To enhance more traffic, backlinks which will help you to maintain site�s ranking. But don�t forget to do link building on the regular basis.

one should have to retain the SEO (both on page and Off page) techniques he is practicing since beginning. Change the contents of the web pages twice in a year and keep building backlinks.

-Update your website with fresh content on regular basis.
-Whenever you update the website with any new things then ping the search engines to crawl the changes made.
-Maintain the quality of your back links
-Update xml site map and upload it to the webmasters tool.
