There are a lot of ways in optimizing a website. But since the latest Google penguin update, a lot of optimization methods are affected. You should also consider white hat method in optimizing your website for it to be search engine friendly and not spammy.

SEO is a process of improving rank of any webpage in SERP. there are two type of optimization method Onpage Optimization and Off page optimization and I think both play important role at the time of ranking. If you are talking about off page techniques then Forum and Blog Posting are two most important techniques which provides fresh content with natural one way link to your website that may helpful to rank well in SERP.

Links from good content is probably the way to go. In addition, the top social media sites are worth the effort for a back link even if it is no-follow. Google notices the buzz they provide.
