Crawling is the process or reading through your webpage source by search engine spiders. They provide a cache certificate after a successful crawl. Indexing is updating the cached webpages in search engine database.

As an add on to the original question, does anyone know if asking Google to re-crawl your site on a regular basis causes any SEO penalty? I see the option to ask Google to re-crawl and have been doing it when making significant site changes.

Just not sure how often to do it.
