Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on the web page compared to the total number of words on the page. In the context of search engine optimization keyword density can be used as a factor in determining wether a web page is relevant to a specific keyword.

Keyword density is the ratio of keywords to the total word count of a given page.
While talking about SEO, Placement of keywords is more important than frequency.
Focusing on creating longer, more valuable content will naturally lead to higher rankings.
A page with dozens of same keywords and Keyword stuffing can receive no search visibility.

Previously, the number of KEYWORDS that were present, were a direct ranking factor for that KEYWORD, but eventually KEYWORD stuffing , and as a result Google now places far less importance on the presence of KEYWORDS.

If you use the keywords 3 times in 100 words content then your keyword density is 3% this is how it is calculated. The recommended keyword density should not be more than 4%.

Keyword density is the percentage of the number of times a keyword appears on a page divided by the total number of words in that page.

So if in an article of 100 words you are using your keyword 10 times, your density will be 10%. Many people use different formulas to calculate keyword density (like this one).

But in essence:

(Number of keywords/ Total number of words) * 100
