Meta description tag might not directly help with ranking anymore but it will surely help to improve CTR and which will eventually help with ranking improvement. Main purpose of meta description tag is to give visitor a brief about the landing page.

Meta descriptions still matter. It's a very good place to include meaningful lsi keywords and phrases for your post. For example if you want to target more than one keyword in your post, the smartly insert them in your meta description with meaningful sentences.

Additional info: These days Google switch meta description for your post titles on SERP if it don't find exact match for the keyword.

So never skip it!
