Please tell me Why sitemap.xml used in SEO?

Sitemaps are generally the maps of any site. A sitemap lists and informs about all the URLs available on a site.It also tells the search engine that when the site was last updated, how often it is updated and what is the priority level of any URL in comparison to other URLs in the site.
