Yes, doorway pages can be dangerous and can hurt web reputation. But its still very popular and if clever made it can work.

Doorway pages is a black hat SEO. If any back link has no relevancy between anchor text and the related web page. For an example users click in order to search biography of a celebrity by clicking the anchor text biography of his name and it takes you to the different web page where the biography of that celebrity is not available. It is counted as a Doorway pages.
