The problems with guest blogging stem from bad practice. Because of the potential SEO benefit of guest blogs, some people have abused the technique. This means that Google has to be very clear on what it considers to be good practice.

In his recent statement, Matt Cutts said that guest blogging had become “overused by a bunch of low-quality, spammy sites”. He made it clear that he was talking about “guest blogging for SEO”, and criticised blog posts that are written purely for quick links in order to manipulate rankings, rather than for real people.

Matt Cutts’ statement doesn’t mean you should stop writing guest posts altogether though. Your business can still benefit from publishing high quality content that reaches out to readers, not just search engines.

It is something that you may often see me refer to as publishing content on a 3rd party site in some of my other articles. You write an article and publish it on another site, as their guest. Guest blogging is when you write an article for another blog other than your one. Usually, the blog you are guest writing for will let you place a link back to your own blog in the article. If you go to a blog, as a guest and post a reply, but at the end you put a link to your site, that is "back linking" and that is SEO done by "guest blogging".
