It could be a PENGUIN thing - unnatural links which can take a year or two to work out.

It could be a PANDA thing - that will cost a substantial amount to fix

It could be a PENGUIN/PANDA combo that will take a long time to figure out and cost a lot to replace.

Those are the 3 most likely events so what shortcuts have you taken to get results?

A technical issue might have presented at the same time but would think this is unrelated... I once had a developer do a misconfiguration of a new blog setup. That allowed his developmental website to be made public and two versions of the same website jockeyed for results within the same domain... they both lost. Ranks diminished and it took me a week to figure it out but three weeks later results recovered... so while a technical issue could have been the catalyst only you have access thus you can figure that out.

The solutions to webspamming are simple but take a great long time to work or cost substantially more as if they didn't no one would use webspam since the risks are too damning and the rewards are fleeting.
