It was during the 1840’s that the temperature controlled ovens came to be used first, when in addition to making the cakes taste sweeter, importance was given to the appearance. This thought was complemented well by the invention of baking powder. And with the gradual improvement in temperature controlled oven technology the act of decorating cakes spread throughout the world.

After being amongst common people, the cakes started taking different forms, with importance being given to the decorations, especially the topping. Many of the eateries added to the flavour of cakes by making them appear attractive and delicious. And soon after, with many types of decorations on cakes being experimented, people started baking cakes in different shapes and sizes.

Later, in 19th century, the French began to serve a different course of food called dessert that spurred the creativity of Englishmen going crazy over creating different types of decorations. And much, later in 1929, an established enterprise called Wilson Enterprises came up with an advertisement reading that they offered some special courses in cake decoration, specifically for caterers who were interested in decorating cakes. This advertisement went viral and raised many eyebrows around the town. However, this course was such a huge hit, by virtue of which, many bakers are coming up with a plethora of cake varieties.

While this is how actually, the decorations of cakes evolved as an art, there are also some other versions of stories regarding the origin of the practice of decorating cakes. The most popular story revolves around the Roman Empire. When Julius Caesar brought forth the tradition of crowning the bride with a cake, it was received well by all the folks but, since they couldn’t afford what the Royalty could, they tried decorating the cakes with what whatever resources at hand; hence this practice of decorating cakes by bakers gradually became famous around the world.
