I don't think it's a good link building methods, links from sites like SlideShare are nofollowed anyway. But I think it's a great referral traffic source. Because they are high authority sites the presentations tend to rank very well for the targeted keywords as well.

Whenever I write a blog post whether for my personal blog or for a client I try find ways to maximize the impact of that content. Sites like SlideShare are great in that regard. You already have the content so it's just a matter of re-purposing that content. So PPT presentation are definitely a resource you should consider.

How to Approach:

I'm not an SlideShare expert so this is my personal approach. In my opinion people use slideshows to quickly go through information. So I try to create my presentations as bullet points highlighting the important point and linking to the relevant resources.
