Having a sitemap, a robots.txt file, a custom 404 page, using meta tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6 & Meta Title, Meta Description) for contents, using alt tag for images and writing unique, excellent and meaningful articles.

First you have to optimize your site On page like meta tag , description, sitemap, robot txt etc then have to start Off page work like directory submission, social bookmarking, article submission, blog posting, blog commenting, forum posting, classified , business listing, video optimization, pdf sharing, SMO with unique content.
