You can also use other techniques like article submission, blogging, press release, bookmarking etc to create backlinks.

Having spoken to Google about this, there are two points I'd like to share:
1. The natural backlinks that your visitors create are also very important. Create great content to inspire them! 2. Write great meta-descriptions because they show up in search results with your keywords and help influence your click through rate (another important SEO factor). Happy rankings! Best, Dustin
