The keywords are the most important aspect of seo. Fist of all do a analysis for your keywords, you can use Google Ad words to find the most effective keyword for you. Use long tailed keywords for better and faster result.

I completely agree with you its important to do an analysis before selecting the keyword. And it's very easy to target and rank long tail keywords, as they have less competition.
