1st of all optimize your site while you are in development phase i.e onpage optimization and then enter in the second phase which is slow and steady process of link building and marketing and regular content changes that is offpage optimization..

For now, Google is getting more wiser and aggressive so you have to be very careful in doing some link building.. Stay away from spammed low quality links.. Avoid generic comments when doing some blog comments.. Always create unique content for your site.. Quality is way much better rather than quantity. Create social signals and tried to submit your links on high pr sites.. No-follow is quite helpful but don't overdo it.. That is why I am getting good results in SERPs for my xmltv iptv format website.
