No, I am not doing directory submission it takes lots of time for approval.

yes, do it, but make sure it is not more then 20% of your links.

I think presently directories are not using properly in SEO, But submission in directories are good to get backlinks.

Directory submission is still a trend and i believe it still does effect on your ranking.
