Twitter is great for getting traffic. But AFAIK all External Links in Twitter are under rel="nofollow" tag, so it's not so helpful for SEO

Yes, twitter is helpful in seo. Because twitter is a social networking site and social media sites are paying a very good roll in SEO for generating good quality of traffic.
