Search engine robots read alt text to know about your webpage image and rank them higher in search results. They are unable to read images directly and hence defining the image with alt text is important to rank images in search engines.

Adding the Alt Text to images gives a context to them. It helps viewers understand the relevance of the image in the context of the page. From SEO point of view it is important to have the alt tag for the images as it helps the search engines to understand the type of image used and help to better index the images.
