Backlinks are important as they help show the value a website has for Search Engines and their customers. Simply, if people or other websites find it important enough to include a link to a site, or within a post on their social profile, blog, etc then that site must be important. A Search Engine's goal is to provide beneficial and useful search results for their customers, the only tools they really have available to find useful results is by comparing keywords on the page to each specific search and then backlinks to determine which of those sites have been the most useful to the web world.
