A good start would be to optimize your website for social media... and what i mean by that is big share buttons on top and under your content also perhaps share buttons over media(images,youtube videos) I see it this way, the more you give a visitor the chance to share the more likely you will see your content get shared over various social media platforms.

From social media sites you cannot create backlinks, it is only used for the promotion of your website, but they will help in getting higher rank on search engine pages.

You can create backlinks from social media. Its good source to get quality backlink
