The benefits are that it can create some backlinks for your site and potentially send direct traffic. If it is a particularly interesting infographic, it could go viral and generate a ton of exposure. A half assed infographic would only get you links from the sites you submit it to. Sometimes you can also convince bloggers to publish the infographic too. Do be aware that a lot of sites that publish it won't be linking back. So it has to be properly branded to get direct traffic.
