When you build links on irrelevant sites, and you also don't have good quality content on your site than google mark you as practicing wrong methods of building links, that's blackhat. To avoid blackhat just focus on few thing and that is relevance, quality, usefulness, and try to post contents that you feel as valuable and useful for people.
