SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a part of SEM (Search Engine Marketing). SEO provides organic search results only whereas SEM includes paid marketing also like PPC.

SEO is search engine optimization and SMo is social media optimization. Search engine optimization includes various tools and technique to get more traffic, but in social media optimization you can use social networking sites like Facebook, google plus, twitter etc.....

SEO can best be explained... "How Popular and Friendly" is your website to Google or any other search engine.
While SEM is more about traffic and how many people will be driven to your site.

SEO is the part of SEM. SEO is to optimize your website and get better rankings in the search results. SEM is the broader term that also involves other methods like PPC advertising.

The difference between SEO and SEM is simply that search engine optimization is part of search engine marketing or search marketing as it is widely known. Both processes aim in increasing visibility in search engines. SEO is about increasing the visibility of site in search engine results. It involves other methods as well which can get you more search engine visitors like PPC advertising.

SEM is a broader term than SEO. Where SEO aims to provide better organic search results, SEM uses the search engines to advertise your website or business to Internet customers and send a more targeted traffic to your Web site.
