This is a very broad question because there are so many factors believed to influence your ability to rank in the search engines, but no one actually understands exactly what has to be done in order to rank. The first thing is to evaluate the strength of your particular keywords. Some will be much easier to rank for than other keywords. Find those that are easier to rank for, but that also have enough search volume to make it worth ranking for. Next will be to create great content related to those keywords for your website. Then start building links back.

For months I use to write for Google. Using longtail keywords, backlinks that i bought on fiverr and other "get traffic quick" methods that will hurt you in the long run. Now I write for people. If i can work in a keyword where and there, then great, but other than that, I focus on writing for the general public.

Firstly target keywords who are mostly searched and who have low competition. Write quality and unique content and submit your sites on Social bookmarking sites, social networking sites, directories, etc.

Great tips, but lets not forget about Google Authorship for Google+. This seems to be of a great importance if you are blogging. Furthermore, using targeted keywords brings a greater value than using random keywords.
