Recently I also looked into the options of VPS vs. semi dedicated.
I learned that a lot of VPS solutions tend to be self managed. Those which are managed by the hoster are more expensive. I ended up with a shared server solution, but one that is specialized in hosting Wordpress. I don't now whether this is an option for others, since it is located in the Netherlands (Savvii). But it is worthwhile to look into similar options. It slashed my page load times by more than 50%.
