To check backlinks, backlinkwatch.com is good. you also visits your webmaster tools to see backlinks.

Google Webmaster Tools is the best way, but there is no way to find out the exact number...

backlink watch uses ahrefs.coms data so ahrefs is better!

earlier, I was using backlinkwatch but now i am using majesticseo. This is very good tool, this tool updating rank on daily basis.
