I can express the point that forum posting helps to create backlinks and drive much traffic to web sites.
One of the best options to get such a service is paidforumposting.com.  I like them and can highly recommend to webmasters.

Forums are basically for sharing and discussing the ideas, info and knowledge. So I would say that participating on relevant forums is learning and helping people learn or know what you know better.
I would say that just posting for the sake of posting is of no use to self as well as anyone else. Hope this help you!!
