Intelligent question because I have seen many use the terms interchangeably, without even noticing the thick line of difference between them. Web design is the aspect that has to do with the visualization part (Look&Feel) or in other words how a user interacts with your website. A web designer utilizes all the design principles to make sure a website appeals to the visitor in the best possible way. His operations includes designing shape and style of drop down menu and main navigation graphics, website background design and clolor and many more whereas, a web development process is about connect the design with the database itself. Web development is a different phenomenon that deals with the back-end operations of a website or how a website functions like how to get user input and where to save it in database, where and when to display content in different pages and sections of the website and so on.
Developers works using programming languages(PHP,ASP, .Net etc) and databases like (oracle, sql, MySql etc) Designers works using designing tools like photoshop, illustrator, coral draw etc. |

Being a web developer or a web designer does not exactly give you an edge with the pretty girls at your local pickup bar. if you were a part-time firefighter or investment banker, maybe. nevertheless, the feud continues between web designers and web developers over which profession is the true calling.

Web Design
Web design is the customer-facing part of the website. A web designer is concerned with how a site looks and how the customers interact with it. Good web designers know how to put together the principles of design to create a site that looks great. They also understand about usability and how to create a site that customers want to navigate around in because its so easy to do. Web Development Web development is the back-end of the website, the programming and interactions on the pages. A web developer focuses on how a site works and how the customers get things done on it. Good web developers know how to program CGI and scripts like PHP. They understand about how web forms work and can keep a site running effectively.

Web designing is the process which deals with visual part of the website like colour combination, look, style, theme selection, font selection, menu navigation, drop down navigation etc. It includes only the work about how website will be represented in front of user to make an impressive first contact with the user.
In other hand web development is the back end process of connecting the database to the designed module to make it working on its each and every click. This process make website running using hard codes using languages like PHP, Joomla, Drupal etc.

i think the importance of this only grows for large projects. small comapnies usually have the same person deal with it all the more money you invest into a site the more people are involved so the bigger the site the more roles and responsibilities come up as much as development and design part have a few roles that the larger the site the more it splits up.

According to me,Web design is a web page, which is designed for viewers out of a site. Not only which is including scripting like HTML/CSS. Which is loading and executed by web browsers.
Web Development, which has to be used for dynamic page. It is developing purpose for those clients interaction between site owner. The thing is, it has more coding part.

I have never met a web designer who knew absolutely no JavaScript, PHP, or HTML. And Ive never met a developer who wasnt aware of the importance of design to a website. But when you apply for a job or look for someone to work on your site, you need to know what youre looking for web design or web development. Even if you can do or hire someone to do both jobs, knowing the difference is key to getting the job done. |

Basically a web developer is someone who works with the technical aspects of a web site or business. What I do every day is essentially build websites. However, this may a bit too simple of an explanation. I build the back end structure of a site. My work is very focused on programming and how to get everything to work together. In other words, if a client wants a site built, they would give me the details of what they want it to do or perform.
The designer, on the other hand, is most concerned about making the site LOOK appealing and pretty. They worry about adding the right color scheme and making sure the site can catch the eye of the visitor. Maybe a web form (which I have installed) would look better in that position over there, so they move it. |

According to me Web design is a wide term covering various disciplines and skills that are used in the maintenance and production of websites. And the main purpose of the Webdevelopment is, of course, to create a great website. A great website should be able to provide information visitors need.

Most of the times a single person is inviolved on both the procedures howeverin large projects many people get involved and both the things are executed separately in sync with each other.
