I actually built a game prototype a few years back which was based on the player being the squire to a hero in a Diablo-style game. Your job was to pick up items dropped by the hero, and handle all of the inventory management, while the hero did quests. You also had to feed potions to the hero to keep his health up, swap out the hero's weapon/armor if the encounter called for it, all while managing the hero's pack (don't let his heavy battle hammer fall on those potions!) The idea was that even if the hero died in an encounter, you'd escape back to town and find a new hero to try again.
