I always look for a few things: reliability, support/knowledge, price - you get what you pay for really.
I'd recommend CentoServer.com and Hostnamaste.com to anyone looking for a good, steady host. No calls needed, no downtime, no virus/hacker problems, so good that I haven't even thought about it. I appreciate the hard work they put into making their service low priced and effective.
