As per me, a well-written content that is useful to the readers will eventually help in improving the site's rank on the search engines. So rather than running after backlinks, I feel a writer should focus more on writing relevant articles and he/she should be regular in posting them. That way, the visitor count will surely improve over time and likewise the site's rank too will improve.
