Basically, anytime someone links to your website from their (excluding search engines), it is a referral. This excludes links from social media and “direct” traffic, which is basically any instance someone visits your website that isn’t measured in any of the other categories.

When you get traffic from social networking websites like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and LinkedIn, it's called referral traffic. Referal traffic also getting from other websites and sources.
