What you can gain is lots of one none spamy links, lots of traffic and buzz.
What you need is some marketing skills, PR and some good social media marketing and of course budget for good content and graphic design.

Few examples:
You develop nice and useful Widget with link in it that point back to your site. You spread the word, people like the widget so they place it on their websites and blogs. And it is done, you get the natural link for every shared widget.

You write some intresting or very controversial post on your blog and once again you spread the word and people are talking about you, pointing and linking to your site.
