An authority link is a backlink from a site already trusted by Google or Bing or Yahoo. That means that most people visiting the site - trust the info on said site. Some good examples would be Wikipedia or a government site.

Once a web site is detected to be an authority, it will get more visibility on the search engines on ANY subject they have listed.
