Page rank is very important if you are in business and you want trust. Its good to build up slowly and maintain a good rank. This way you will also be able to monitor your website. For example if you go down in page rank you will realize that you need to do something. You can achieve a good ranking if you build quality backlinks for your website. This will take time so if you don't have it you can get someone else to do it for you.

You should believe that Page rank is also influential factor for ranking as you believe that link is the most important factor because page rank is directly dependent on number and quality for links. I think you are thinking this because Google is not updating pr often and you see less pr websites ranking high and that is because their content and anchor text of links are more relevant, but still Google has not updated pr.

Having done some research on the Internet it has become clear that Page rank is primarily a result of gaining sufficient backlinks.

Preferrably these backlinks also should be of high quality, although the sheer number of the backlinks is also important.
