If you're a beginner don't start with java on web development.
PHP all the way. And do everything from template system to database connections, try to do a simple game etc. Then move to something like the java play framework. Keep in mind php is much slower than java for any more than low computations. I would recommend my browser games making tutorial blog where you can learn a bit of everything from php, from sessions to template systems etc. makingbrowsergames.com
