Traffic (unique) is the most important signal for a sites popularity... I agree... however, the links from social networks carry importance... authority...
people visiting my site just visiting... no 'responsibility' thing attached... but people sharing it with others or voting for it seem to be own up some 'responsibility'... increases my sites importance... just like.. I may not be an active member of a party but voting for it... that makes the party important
