First of all you need to know little bit about major search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc. and know how they do work and read some high quality blogs, then start off-page activities that really more beneficial for your knowledge and your projects. And I will suggest you some off-page activities that:
Bookmarking, Directory, Article, Blog Post, Blog Commenting, etc.
