First you must have quality content, then optimize with SEO techniques such as building high quality backlinks by submitting articles to directories, participating in forums, blog postings.

A significant part of SEO is to ensure you weave keywords into your content. If you find yourself using highly competitive keywords, try using longtail keyword phrases instead of just a "keyword". A longtail is lower competition and you have a better chance to rank for it.
