Blog comments are still considered helpful, if they are written well and seem naturally formed. If you force a KW term into a comment that looks spammy.. Google may see it as spam. Where you place your comments is also critical. Avoid spammy sites, link farms, and crappy looking sites that are obviously not really being used by people. Comments still count.. they just have to be of good quality and relevant. Engagement in anway on the web counts.. if you have authorship setup.
