Reverting back to old tactics to test the waters and see if they still work

Yesterday, I was at my computer and thinking of ways to help my personal business website (It's only 1 month old). Since it isn't seasoned and only has been crawled twice by Google (cause I pinged the bot), I decided to pull an old trick out of my hat.
I found 5-6 expired domains with a PR of 2 that are of the same subject matter as my new website and I bought the domains. Then I did the old 301 redirect to my domain. I actually got lucky and one of the domains had a chat topic tied to my profession. So I redirected that domain to a blog page in the back of my site to spread the 301's out.
I understand they only have a PR2, but hey, my pr is ZERO! So I hope my little investment works like it did in the old days. I'd be happy if they pulled my up to PR1 fast. It would be well worth the $50. And if I could get a matched rank at PR2, it would really have been worth it!
