Err, it depends of what you think "great" is.
As long as their is Google and other search engine, there'll alway be this way or another to SEO a page. And because people tend to make think fast, I think yes, it has a great future.

Yes, SEO has a great future ahead.

But you need to be ready for changes and keep updating as google changes it's rules rapidly, you need to adopt it.

If we look at the today's market, each and every business today wants to create their presence online and just because of this reason SEO is now in & will be in trend. I believe SEO has great future ahead as everyone wants to target online audience to sell their products. it creates competition among the sellers to stay ahead over their competitors and it's only possible through SEO and online marketing.
